National Football League (NFL) Pre-Game Fly Overs

March3

With the NFL season, football becomes all-consuming on Sunday’s which for many fans means watching the pregame show. One of the Pre-Game events is the fly over, hopefully in sync with the ending of the National Anthem. This film is an inside look at how the fly over works and how it’s planned far in advance by many personnel. Flyover is a term widely used in the United States. The Commonwealth, United Kingdom, and other countries use the term Flypast to denote ceremonial or honorific flights by groups of aircraft and, rarely, by a single aircraft. Flyby mostly refers to military situations.) Flyovers are often tied in with sporting or state events, anniversaries, celebrations – and occasionally funerary or memorial occasions. Sometimes flyovers occur in special situations, to honor someone or to celebrate certain types of aircraft. They have affinities with parades, of which they form the aerial component. Often they occur in purely display contexts at airshows, but it is the flyover linked with civic, sporting events, ceremonial and national pride, that imprint themselves on a nation’s memory. These spectacular and daring displays of military – and occasionally passenger – aircraft, are described in broadcast and print media as “historic”. Flyovers are regularly featured in public and ceremonial life at sproting events, where they function as a particular kind of aerial salute. They serve to show respect, display aircraft, showcase flying skills and delight the public. In Commonwealth countries, notably Singapore, Canada and Australia, they occur on national days and occasionally on anniversaries. They are seen more rarely in other territories.

Hey, I am no big fan of war either, but the purpose of the flyover is just to let the people know. “Hey there are 50,000 of you people here and that could be a target for the bad guys but don’t worry we got your back.” Have a great time!

Might have to agree to disagree with you on thos one.
Yeah, the opening cermonies might be “militarized” as you and I agree with you but certinly not anything like the Soviet Union.
    Just my opinion.

Militarized opening ceremonies- like something out of the Soviet Union- then half-time announcers telling us that “The Troops” are fighting to protect our rights and freedoms.

GREAT VIDEO! My boys got to see their first flyover today at Bobby Dodd Stadium in Atlanta for the Georgia Tech vs Wake Forest game…Scared the crap out of all of us, but it’s simply an awesome experience!

I’m no expert on them, but I swear they were significantly lower today than “normal” flyovers. Search for “gt wake flyover” and watch a couple of them and you’ll see what I mean. We were in the upper deck and it looked like you could almost reach out and touch them!

    The USofA ROCKS!

We have flyovers several times a year and they could be jets, regular prop airplanes or helicoptors.
I think it depends on whether or not it’s a national game or if it’s a Sunday night or Monday night game also.

  20. On March 3rd, 2010 at 5:37 pm DCSportFan Says:

How many flyovers do you all have a year and what are they?

The Redskins usually only have one a year which is done by Huey’s, even though we’re about 5 miles from Andrews Aiforce Base.
